About Dawson Cattle

Our Story

At Dawson Cattle, we raise both Registered and Commercial Texas Longhorn Cattle in South Texas located just North of Corpus Christi.

A little short backstory, back in 2013, our dad, Vance Dawson IV, decided he wanted to purchase a couple Registered Texas Longhorns to place in the front pasture to have as lawn art. Soon, these Longhorns weren't just considered pets or lawn art... Bringing joy into his life they became a big part of the family. Everyone loved to come over to hang out and feed them. One of our big bulls, Buster, was his baby, and he would spend time with him every single day.

Although he didn't keep up with all the paperwork on the calves born over the years (he just loved having them as pets), most of our Longhorns are registered and have very strong bloodlines such as Tejas Star, Over Kill, Ace's Mojo, JP Rio Grande, Lady Monika BL, TCC Houdini, VJ Tommie aka Unlimited, Delta Van Horne, and Overwhelmer, just to name a few.

Our father has since passed away in 2021. However, his love of Longhorns still lives on and I hope to make a name in the industry on behalf of our father.

You will notice the calves that are bred on our property will be registered with a "IV" at the end of their name in honor of him.

We are currently up to date with TLBAA and Horns, but please check out our Herd here on our website!

It wasn't until 2022 that I decided to start updating and getting organized with our registered head. The first thing I did was clean up our herds and bring in new genetics with respectful names in their pedigrees. I did keep our OG's, Houston's Silver Lining, CDC Tex 243, and JTW Emperor's Pride Rose (has since passed).

Dawson Cattle has 2 different herds. One is located in Woodsboro, Texas and the other is in Gregory, Texas.

All of our cattle do come from registered bloodlines, however, you will see a few commercial ladies being kept with our registered. I do like to keep these ladies in our pastures since they have been in our family for quite some time now and we absolutely love them. Being easy to work with, it's always nice to have a calm matriarch in the catch pens to teach the littles or newbies how to act properly while we are working with them.

Few Fun Random Facts:

  • Texas Longhorn Cattle are one of the hardiest cattle breeds out there. They are less susceptible to diseases and will eat just about any vegetation.
  • Longhorn beef is considered lean meat, right behind venison. It is lower in cholesterol and calories compared to chicken and other beef breeds.
  • Texas Longhorns almost went extinct in the early 1900's.
  • They are fun to take pictures of :)

If you are new to the Longhorn family and if I could pass any information on to you, the most important thing that I have taken out of all the things I have read, heard, discussed with others so far about is to breed what you like to see in your pastures.

Here at Dawson Cattle, that is exactly what we do.

We personally breed for a calm docile temperament (this is VERY important to us as most times, it is just one or two of us working them), amazing mothering / milking ability along with great calving ease, fertility, and body composition that we personally like to see in our cows.

I will say here at Dawson Cattle, we go for character when it comes to the horn rather than chasing the tip to tip measurements. But just by looking at our herd, I may be partial to the ones with the old school handlebar twists! I can't get enough of them!
